My family’s Walt Disney World vacations always fall in August. Yes, you’re right, July/August is the hottest time of the year in Florida, but if you follow these tips on how to stay cool at Disney World, you’ll be just fine and will have no problems beating the Florida heat.
Tips on How to Stay Cool at Disney World
1. Dress Properly
The best clothes for Disney World isn’t hard to figure out, so this tip is a bit self-explanatory 🙂
Dress lightly, wear light coloured clothing, wear proper sunglasses, and never forget to wear a protective hat. Remember that the sun in Florida is stronger than it is anywhere here in Canada, so don’t forget the sunscreen!
2. Plan to visit the Parks Early or Later in the Day
Florida is HOT in the summer, no matter the time of day. However, if you hit the parks before the sun has reached its peak or after the sun has set, you won’t have to deal with the sweltering, directly overhead sunlight.
3. Stay Hydrated
Did you know that you could request free ice water from any quick service restaurant? It’s true!
This is a great way to keep cool, it will save you from having to spend your snack credits on bottles of water (use your credits on these things instead!), and it will also save you from lugging around a heavy water bottle of your own.
4. Dip In and Out of the Stores
Stores are EVERYWHERE and one great thing about them is that they’re air conditioned. Any time you need a break, it’s not hard to find a store to check out and while you’re in there, you may also find your next favourite Disney souvenir!
5. Invest in a Misting Fan
Misting fans are sold at stands throughout the parks, but you can also find these fans at some sporting goods’ stores before going on your trip (they’ll be a little cheaper if you go that route).
We own two that were bought outside of the parks and we also bought one from a stand in the Magic Kingdom a few years ago.
When comparing the two, we found that the best misting fan for Disney are those sold at Disney. Ours has held up really well over the years and is still going strong.
6. Enjoy an Indoor Show or Attraction
There are many shows and attractions throughout the parks that take place in the sweet, air conditioned indoors. Many of them have queues that are partially or fully indoors, as well.
Here are just a few, add them to your list!
- Mickey’s PhilharMagic (Magic Kingdom)
- Enchanted Tales with Belle (Magic Kingdom)
- The Carousel of Progress (Magic Kingdom)
- The Land and Sea Pavilions (Epcot)
- Test Track (Epcot)
- Innoventions (Epcot)
- Star Tours (Hollywood Studios)
- Voyage of the Little Mermaid (Hollywood Studios)
- Beauty & The Beast – Live On Stage (Hollywood Studios)
- Finding Nemo – The Musical (Animal Kingdom)
- Festival of the Lion King (Animal Kingdom)
- It’s Tough to Be a Bug (Animal Kingdom)
7. Visit Club Cool
If you’ve never been to Club Cool in Epcot, you must go on your next trip!
Of course, water is the best way to hydrate yourself on hot days, but sipping on some cold, free, refreshing sodas from around the world in an air conditioned building is a fun way to cool off and a great idea for how to stay cool at Disney World.
My favourite of all the drinks is Inca Cola, but be sure to try the Beverly and tell me in the comments what you think of it 😉
8. Take Advantage of Your Resort’s Pool
Each Disney resort has its own pool, and if you’re staying offsite, chances are, you’ll have access to a pool where you are staying too. Visit your pool as often as you can!
Every Disney resort pool I’ve been to has things that make them unique, but the Disney pool we love the most is the one at the Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter.
9. Buy Frogg Toggs Chilly Pad Cooling Towels
Frogg Toggs towels are made from a magical material that will cool you off just from placing it on your skin! (it’s really made from a hyper-evaporative material that holds water but feels dry to the touch).
You can find them in sporting goods stores or you can also find them on Amazon.
10. Find a Shaded Area and Take a Break
If you keep an eye out, you’ll be able to find benches or areas to sit that are situated in shaded areas. Get a snack, grab a spot, and people watch while you rest your feet and cool off for a bit!
Note that Animal Kingdom is the least shady of all the parks, so finding shaded areas here, in my experience, is a little difficult.
11. Visit One (or both!) of Disney’s Water Parks
This is the ultimate idea for how to stay cool at Disney World!
If a day at one of the water parks can’t be a part of your schedule, then be sure to ride all the water rides the main parks have to offer, you may get a little wet to help cool down!
- Splash Mountain (Magic Kingdom)
- Pirates of the Caribbean (Magic Kingdom)
- Kali River Rapids (Animal Kingdom)
12. Find a Misting Station
There are a few to be found in all of the parks, find one and get lightly misted down until you’ve cooled off!
Visiting Disney during the summer is going to be HOT, there’s no way around it, but if you follow these tips on how to stay cool at Disney World, keeping cool won’t be something you have to stress about during your vacation.
