On our last trip to Walt Disney World, we stayed at Disney’s Port Orleans Riverside for the second time.
The first time we chose this resort, it was our first trip to Disney as a family and we chose a royal room. Everyone loved it, so when the time came for us to plan our latest trip, despite Disney’s Port Orleans French Quarter being my personal favourite resort, the majority won and Riverside it was!
It had been a few years since we had stayed at Riverside, but after stepping off the Magical Express and entering the lobby, I quickly remembered why we love this calm, pretty, moderate resort.
If you’re debating where to stay on your next trip, have a read through the points below and see if you think it’s a place that would be a good fit for you and your family.
And if you have questions, please leave a comment below! Both Rebecca and I have stayed here, so ask away!
5 Reasons to Pick Disney’s Port Orleans Riverside Resort
1. It’s a Beautiful Resort
All Disney resorts are beautiful in their own way and have those unique things that make you fall in love with them, but I think what makes Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – Riverside special, is that it’s a sight to be seen.
This is a very large resort, so there are many buildings, and depending on which one you’re staying in, your walk to the main building (above) can be short, or it can be on the longer side.
BUT, despite walks being on the longer side, depending on where you’re going, getting there is pleasant because the views are worth the extra time.
Enjoy those walks throughout the resort and the warm temperature, you’re at Disney 🙂
There are a few gazebos throughout the resort like the one above, this particular gazebo was the one at the end of the pathway that lead away from our mansion room.
There are two sections to Disney’s Port Orleans Riverside, the Mansions and the Alligator Bayou. The image above shows a building from the Alligator Bayou.

2. The Ferryboat Service
This is one of the reasons I love the Port Orleans’ resorts. Both Riverside and French Quarter offers this service.
We love spending time in Disney Springs, and the ferryboat comes by regularly, weather permitting, to ferry guests over.
Ferryboats come approximately every 20-minutes and the ride down the Sassagoula river to the Disney Springs Resort area will take about 20-minutes. It’s a slow, calm ride and a HUGE perk to staying at one of the two Port Orleans resorts.
You can take the bus to Disney Spring as well, but the ferryboat is so much more relaxing!
3. The Food
Riverside is one of the few resorts that have both a quick service food court AND a table service restaurant.
We have not had a chance to eat at Boatright’s Dining Hall, the table service restaurant, but we have eaten at the food court, too many times to count.
The Riverside Mill Food Court is quite big and there are several stations, each offering something a little different, depending on the time of day.
The variety is what makes this food court great, there is something for everyone, even the little picky eaters.
4. The Rooms
We never spend a ton of time in our room but when we do, it’s nice to have a place that’s comfortable. Riverside’s rooms are standard, but cozy.
The style and decor will vary a bit, depending on which part of the resort you’re staying in.
Alligator Bayou Rooms are a little different from a Mansion room and then there are also the Royal Rooms that were mentioned above.
No matter which part of the resort you’re staying in, your room will have a mini fridge, a TV, double sinks, double mirrors, a coffee maker, a safe, and lots of space to store and hang your clothes.
5. The Amenities
One of our favourite amenities at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – Riverside is the ferryboat mentioned above, but it doesn’t stop there.
I love having access to the convenient on-site store. In the store, you can pick up snacks, souvenirs, clothing, things for your kitchen, and so much more. It’s not a tiny store!
In addition to the store, Disney’s Port Orleans Riverside also offers Movies Under the Stars on select nights, one of our favourite things to do after a long day.
You also get free Wi-Fi, bus transportation to the parks and other resort areas, Magical Express transportation to and from the airport, marshmallow roasting, bike rentals, trails for walking and running, playgrounds, an arcade, several pools, and more!
The Disney Port Orleans Riverside and French Quarter resorts are sister resorts and are only separated by a short, 10-minute walk down one of the many paths.
All of the amenities at French Quarter are accessible to you if you’re staying at Riverside, so take a quick stroll over to see how pretty French Quarter is too!
